What is art therapy?
Art therapy is all about using creativity for self-expression. You might doodle, collage, paint or draw. Perhaps you’ll look through a stack of postcards or choose an object and share what comes to mind. You may even bring in a photo of a family member and tell a story about them.
Art therapy is open to all, regardless of age. No skill in art is needed - just the willingness to give it a go. Talking is part of art therapy too and you can choose how much you talk/create.
Art therapists encourage thinking about the creative process. We might reflect on how the art materials felt, what thoughts/feelings came up for you, or what your imagery/creation made you think of. If you’re not sure what to do in a session, I can give prompts and suggestions. My role as an art psychotherapist is to facilitate this exploration.
Therapy provides a weekly, confidential and non-judgemental space where you have the freedom to choose what direction you’d like to go in. Sometimes talking while doing something else can feel more comfortable or help with concentration. This process of making (as well as talking) can help us make sense of experiences, find new perspectives, allow something to gently shift, and ultimately may help us feel more settled and in control. These all contribute to feelings of wellness.
